'It's just my music.  It's the only thing I have real dignity in my life. That's the one area in my life where I can hold my head up and say, "No one can touch me." 'Cos no one can touch me!' - Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was with without question one of the outstanding vocalist of her generation.  In an era of manufactured stars and pop puppets, she was the real deal.  With her instantly recognisable image, her powerful lyrics and that voice, she had the ability to take you on a journey. Her rawness and emotional honesty cut through pop's hyperbole injecting soul, meaning and depth back into the modern music scene.  Often compared to the legendary Nina Simone, Winehouse had been credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and for revitalising British music.  Her second album ‘Back to Black’ with its six Grammy nominations, changed the music scene for ever.  Winning over the masses with its lyrical musings on broken hearts and emotional turmoil, ‘Back to Black’ will go down as one of the classic British albums.

And this is how she should be remembered.
Everything else is irrelevant.

Ed Sheeran - You Need Me, I Don't Need You (Official Video)

Don't you just love it when an artist steps onto the scene with a fresh and exciting sound?  Ed Sheeran broke through commercially this June with his UK number 3 hit 'The A Team' after years of being a YouTube sensation.  His second single 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' is proving to be another hit in the pipeline and the video isn't too shabby either.  Directed by Emil Nava, the visuals simply yet effectively focuses on 17 year old Matthew Morgan who delivers visually arresting sign language to the songs lyrics.  Simple, yet brilliant.  This is a music video that should definitely be checked out!

Love Is A War.

So, it begins.  Amore.  Sweet disposition.  The heart thuds, the tummy flutters, that sudden charge of electricity.
Zap.
The adventure.  The excitement.  The fear of the unknown.  It’s a beautiful thing; a gentile reminder that you.are.alive.  But it never ends the way it begins, does it?
So dust off your armour, shields and white flags.
The war is here...

'Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does, love is a battle, love is a war.'
- James Arthur Baldwin

The Pain of Desire

British artist Wendy Bevan draws viewers into the dreamy world of her mysteriously haunting femme fatales.  Entitled The Pain of Desire, the exhibition explores the theatricality of female desire, and the inner pain suffered through the pursuit of identity and success.  The haunting women are captured in moods vacillating from serenity to near-madness and claustrophobia.
Bevan is known for her surreal aesthetic, and a sympathetic portrayal of the feminine form – a refreshing alternative to the glossy, digitally manipulated imagery that surround us today.  Bevan questions ideas of perfection promoted by contemporary society and media, and the impact it can have on women, fueling desire for an ideal that doesn’t exist.
The show will be held at The Cob Gallery until the 30th July.
